Eulo is a small town but seems to capture the spirit and atmosphere of Queensland's Outback. Once the bustling main centre for the opal miners, the area was chosen for settlement given its proximity to a good waterhole on the Paroo River.
At the Eulo Queen Hotel, not only the ale flows freely, but so too do the many legends surrounding the Eulo Queen. Isobel Robinson ran the hotel towards the end of the nineteenth century – virtually reining over the town and the nearby opal fields, hence her title – the Eulo Queen.
As you enter Eulo, on the right is the famous 'Paroo Track' which is where the world lizard racing championships are held. At the left-hand side of the track is a piece of granite with a plaque that reads: 'Cunnamulla-Eulo Festival of Opals. 'Destructo', champion racing cockroach accidentally killed at this track (24 August 1980) after winning the challenge (sic) stakes against 'Wooden Head', champion racing lizard 1980. Unveiled 23 August 1981'.
Each winter beekeepers come to the area to allow their bees to feed on the Warrego variety of Eucalyptus found in the region. While in Eulo, try the local Yapunya honey, which the locals call the ‘Taste of the Outback’.
