A small friendly outback community south of Quilpie, Toompine is a social centre for the surrounding grazing properties and opal mines. The town derives its name from the Aboriginal word 'Thempin' meaning a leech.
Cobb and Co once serviced this town with its regular coach schedules. All that remains today of those early pioneering days is the Toompine Hotel (circa 1893). This is a great place to relax with a cold drink and listen to the yarns of some great outback characters.
Ask for directions to the Toompine cemetery just a kilometre away and find out why it is called a 'cemery' (not cemetery).
Try your luck fossicking at Duck Creek Opal Mine or Sheep Creek Station Opal Mine - fossicking licence required.
