On the 25 of July 1940 the 16th Australian Garrison Battalion was formed at Sydney to guard the three camps at Hay 6, 7 and 8. Over 200 of those who enlisted at Hay during World War Two served in the Garrison. On 5 July 1943 the strength of the Garrison was increased from 546 to 688. On 25 of May 1943 Hay outpost of 41 Heavy Wireless Unit began operations and propaganda radio broadcasts to the Japanese in the north.
